For the next 17 years, Bernadette flourished. The
Millers settled in Las Vegas,
where they enjoyed a happy and prosperous marriage. Bill was a marketing
genius, and through his guidance and her talents, Bern
worked the top showrooms in Las Vegas
and enjoyed associations with some of the biggest names in music. She was
in a long-running show called “Divine Divas” and toured with Sonny Turner of
the Original Platters, traveling all over the world. The couple had a
daughter, Chokise, and enjoyed living the Las Vegas
lifestyle.
The solid marriage Bernadette enjoyed for so many years began
to founder around her. Success and prosperity had brought tension. Just
as the marriage was reaching its final act, Bernadette struck a professional coup when
she was chosen from a pool of over four hundred hopefuls to become one of the
Supremes at the Motown Café at New York New York Hotel and Casino on the famed
Las Vegas Strip. Staying in Texas
for a few weeks to learn the choreography allowed her and her daughter a
much-needed break from the stresses of divorce. The time away also
reminded her that she didn’t need her husband to be successful.
When Bernadette finally walked away from the marriage, she
entered a period of disillusionment. Her faith in God was severely
tested. Not only did her personal life spiral out of control, but her
successful career as a live performer in Las
Vegas was also at its ebb. Bernadette
explains: “9/11 was the end of it for Black performers in Vegas.
Tourism became really slow and the market became tighter."
